BALÇIK TORMEC stem-type thermostats

Control and safety in one head, plugged onto the element.

A rigid sensing stem in the pocket tube acts on a snap-action switch: direct switching without electronics, tolerant of the humidity and temperature inside a water-heater terminal cover.

BALÇIK TORMEC acquired the Italian brand Tormec in 2006; today stem thermostats are designed and manufactured by BALÇIK TORMEC for storage water heaters, boilers and some industrial tanks. The current range covers mechanical and liquid-expansion designs, supplied separately or fitted to our water-heater elements.

Versions

One platform, four versions.

How the temperature is controlled, how the safety limiter acts and who sets the temperature – every version plugs directly onto the heating element.

Control

Single-pole regulating thermostat

The stem's thermal expansion opens a snap-action switch and holds the water at the set temperature.

Control and safety

Regulating and safety cut-out combination

Single-pole control and a double-pole safety limiter in one tamper-proof head. The limiter opens both poles on over-temperature and stays open until reset by hand.

  • Stem-actuated limiter, or an independent bimetal limiter as an option

Three-phase

Two-pole and three-pole versions

Versions that switch all live conductors, for 400 V three-phase water heaters and tanks.

  • 16 A / 400 V three-pole

Setting

Factory-set or adjustable

Fixed temperature set during calibration and protected by the housing, or adjusted by the appliance maker in production or by the end user with a knob.

  • Multiple control-knob options
Archive: the 2016 brochure of the hybrid (electronic) stem thermostat stays available as a PDF of the hybrid thermostat brochure and as an online flip-book of the brochure. The hybrid model is not in current sales, and values in the archive edition may be outdated – current specifications are in the table above.

Anatomy

A stem that senses, a switch that snaps, a cut-out that stays open.

The stem sits in the pocket tube next to the element. Its expansion drives the snap-action switch of the regulating contact; a separate safety cut-out opens on over-temperature and needs a manual reset.

Element and controlBALÇIK TORMEC thermostats are supplied separately or fitted to our water-heater elements as one assembly.

One supplier for element and control

Matched assemblies, fewer interfaces.

Specifying element and thermostat together removes a supplier interface and a wiring step from your line – and puts one engineering team behind the assembly.

  • Plugs directly onto the element – less wiring and lower mounting cost than a separately mounted thermostat.
  • Specified together through co-design: stem length, pocket position, settings and terminals.
  • Calibrated in a computerised process and protected by a tamper-proof housing.
  • Earth connection through the mounting bracket.

Design considerations

Four choices that decide how the water heater behaves.

Stem, contacts, cut-out and the control standard – fixed on the drawing together with the element.

Stem length and position

The stem senses the water around it. Its length – typically 150 – 450 mm – and the pocket position decide which water layer the thermostat controls.

Contacts and current

Silver-alloy contacts rated 16 A / 20 A at 250 V AC single-pole. Size the rating to the element current: a 3000 W element at 230 V draws about 13 A.

Safety cut-out

Fixed, typically 85 – 110 °C, and independent of the setting knob. Manual reset for storage water heaters; automatic reset only where the appliance standard allows it.

Control standards

Designed to EN 60730-1 and EN 60730-2-9 (automatic electrical controls, temperature sensing controls); RoHS and REACH declarations available.

Validation: each thermostat is calibrated in a computerised process; element-and-thermostat assemblies are checked in our validation laboratory – functional check, dielectric strength, insulation resistance and leakage current. How we test – quality and laboratory
